Shenandoah Telecommunications, ReCellular Partner To Provide Cell Phone Recycling

Residents of Shenandoah Valley and Beyond Can Pick Up Postage Paid Mail-In Recycling Envelopes at Any Shentel Retail Store

EDINBURG, VA and DEXTER, MI – April 2006 – Shenandoah Telecommunications Company (Shentel; NASDAQ: SHEN) and ReCellular Inc., the world’s foremost collector, reseller and recycler of used wireless handsets and accessories, today announced a new recycling program for residents in all Shentel service areas, making it easy, fast and free to recycle used cell phones.

Beginning today, Shentel is making prepaid mailing envelopes available in all Shentel retail stores. The public can use the envelopes to mail in their used or unwanted cell phones for recycling or other responsible reuse, regardless of the make, model or condition. Cell phone accessories are also accepted.

All equipment mailed in the prepaid envelopes goes to ReCellular, Shentel’s authorized recycling partner. Currently processing over four million handsets per year, ReCellular is able to utilize approximately two thirds of the handsets it collects for resale in developing nations where new phones are cost-prohibitive. Products that cannot be refurbished are disassembled and responsibly recycled. No handset components go to landfills, making the process a highly effective method of reducing or eliminating the electronic waste generated by trashed cell phones.

“Shentel encourages all its customers, as well as the general public, to take advantage of this simple and free way to help protect the environment,” said Willie Pirtle, vice president of Shentel. “Virtually every part of a used cell phone can be reused in some fashion. By picking up a mail-in envelope at your nearest Shentel retail location and mailing in your used or unwanted wireless handsets and accessories, you’ll be doing yourself and the citizens of the Shenandoah Valley a real favor.”

“ReCellular is proud to work with Shentel and the residents of Shenandoah, Warren, Frederick and Rockingham Counties in this important endeavor,” said Charles Newman, president and CEO of ReCellular, Inc. “Proper recycling of personal electronics is important, which is why ReCellular has dedicated itself to meeting or exceeding all relevant environment legislation at both the state and federal levels. We look forward to helping residents of the Shenandoah Valley put their no-longer-used cell phones to the best possible use.”

Shentel has been providing communications services to the public since 1902. Through its affiliates, Shentel offers a full menu of telecommunications alternatives including telephone service, cable television, Internet service, and long distance.
